Timber-framed houses like these dated back to the 16th and early 17th centuries and were still common in Southwark and the surrounding areas at the beginning of the 19th century

which he began surveying in 1738

The section covers the area between Pandora Street in the North West

However it is the two youths waiting by the lamp post which really draw the eye. Collins created a number of night time photographs playing with the bright lights of the West End to record the characters enjoying the buzz of fifties nightlife.
